Description

ALLEGRO is a software technology that was developed by Observera, Inc. to assist the U.S. Army in generating on-demand, high-quality feature data from imagery. ALLEGRO or Advanced Land-class Land-use Extraction for Geospatial Region Operations is a process of using high resolution imagery to improve classification of lower-resolution, Larger-footprint imagery by utilizing advanced fusion techniques.

ALLEGRO was originally designed to exploit LANDSAT data. This data has a large coverage footprint, frequent revisit times, ubiquitous availability and consistent collection parameters. Because of LANDSAT's changing availability in the future, ALLEGRO now supports many native products such as ASTER, IKONOS, CIB5, ADRG, SPOT5.

Features

Many users of High Resolution Multi-Spectral Imagery (HRMSI) realize the value of this type of data. The higher spatial resolution lends itself to datasets that are rich with information. Although, these datasets are traditionally very expensive. Another drawback is that these datasets cover much smaller swath sizes per scene. For example, one LANDSAT scene covers approximately 185km x 178km while one IKONOS scene only covers 13km x 13km. The higher spatial resolution of HRMSI is also offset by the availability of fewer spectral bands in these datasets. This results in a smaller number of bands to exploit, thus limiting the differentiation of spectral classes.

This leaves users seeking to generate Land cover or Land classification datasets with the choice of using advanced fusion techniques on readily available datasets like LANDSAT or exploiting expensive, hard to handle HRMSI to generate these datasets.

Capabilities

The ALLEGRO workflow includes a four step process. Step 1 involves preprocessing of the data. The remaining three steps are an iterative process whereby the user Defines training sets, Training Set Augmentation and the final Classification Step.

System Requirements

ALLEGRO has been developed with cross-platform libraries. The current distribution has been designed for Windows-based operating systems and has been tested on Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP.

ALLEGRO is currently a prototype application that was originally funded by the US Army through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. Observera is currently seeking new application opportunities with additional imaging systems.
